I've been hinting around for the past few weeks, maybe months, that there is a new project brewing around here. The first I already spilled the beans on - I am writing a non-fiction book about relocating with kids. The second goes hand-in-hand, and it's all about getting that book (and some others) out into the world. Like any new venture, there's been a ton of research (probably too much), a fair amount of doubt (trying to keep that in check is a part-time job on its own), and a lot of staring … [Read more...] about new ventures
making better choices, starting with lunch
My skin is acting up. My stomach isn't doing much better. My energy level is off-the-charts low, bottomed out. I know exactly what I have to do to get myself back on track. We know the drill: Eat more fruits and veggies and less sugar. Get a little exercise. Lay off the caffiene and the alcohol. Shop for healthy things so that you have healthy choices on hand. There is nothing complicated about the solution. I don't need a diet plan to remind me to eat less crap and to be a little kinder to … [Read more...] about making better choices, starting with lunch
being a mother and a child
I was walking by the small garden next to our church. It was one of those spring days that you still need a sweater even thought the air has a new sense of warmth that wasn't there a few weeks, even days, before. I had a few extra minutes, so I found a bench. It just happened to be across from a statue of Mary. I wasn't raised in the tradition of Mary, but recently I've had her on my mind. We are both mothers after all. I sat there for awhile. Mary stood across from me elevated, with … [Read more...] about being a mother and a child
that time i egged my own car #tbt
Here's a little throw back to when I had two kids under the age of three and stayed home with them full-time. If you're a mother that has ever had a very public meltdown and maybe tossed a few things, Happy Mother's Day. This one's for you. What is that smell? Every time we got in our minivan there was a horrible stench. My husband compulsively checked under the seats for lost sippy cups filled with rancid milk. He scoured every nook and cranny for the source of that smell. Only I … [Read more...] about that time i egged my own car #tbt
new jeans
I'm sitting on a bench with my husband waiting for a train. I make some benign comment about the complexities of dressing for spring weather. Or maybe I said, will it ever get warm? And he says... Maybe we could get you some new jeans. Me: New jeans? Him: Yeah, new jeans. He gestures to the small rubbed worn patch at my hip. Me: These are new jeans. Him: Really? Me: These are my new, trendy boyfriend jeans. Him: Those are new? Me: Yep. Him: Really? Me: Yep. Him: That's totally … [Read more...] about new jeans
do you have ten minutes?
I've been feeling a little overwhelmed this week. With life. With projects and all of the things I want to be and do. Usually I would make a list. Go into attack mode. How am I going to solve this? Break it down. Make it happen. But this time, I decided to do the complete opposite. I took a glass of water out onto my porch and sat still for ten minutes. It was extremely difficult. The mental tally was going of all the things I needed to be doing of all the things that I could be doing. It … [Read more...] about do you have ten minutes?
if you have something nice to say
Don't wait another minute. If you've had someone on your mind enjoyed something they've made missed them being around been inspired by their strength Tell them. Thank them. I'll even give you a template: You made my day with your ___________. Thanks for being so awesome. Your friends, your family, your kids, your spouse. They need to hear it. They want to hear it. You might think that they already know. But everyone needs to be reminded. Be grateful. Be … [Read more...] about if you have something nice to say
what if the cabin loses air pressure?
Traveling is always an adventure, throwing out tests left and right. What do you do if you accidentally check your ID in your luggage? (Beg security.) How many times will the kid in the seat behind you throw up? (Four.) How many hours can you live on Starbucks alone? (Six. Maybe eight.) How many bagels will your kids eat in one day? (Three. At least.) You have to be flexible. You have to be prepared and ready for anything. On our way home from Florida at the end of our … [Read more...] about what if the cabin loses air pressure?
