being a mother and a child

mary

I was walking by the small garden next to our church. It was one of those spring days that you still need a sweater even thought the air has a new sense of warmth that wasn’t there a few weeks, even days, before.

I had a few extra minutes, so I found a bench. It just happened to be across from a statue of Mary.

I wasn’t raised in the tradition of Mary, but recently I’ve had her on my mind.

We are both mothers after all.

I sat there for awhile. Mary stood across from me elevated, with open arms.

I wasn’t really feeling anything or looking for anything. I was just enjoying the nice day.

And then out of nowhere a lump caught in my throat.

And these thoughts were with me…

There’s a place for you here.

I’m here with open arms.

There is always a place for you here.

I’ll wait. Until you’re ready.

I’m not going anywhere.

You’ll know when and where to find me.

These thoughts settled on me, and I realized that being eternally available is the essence of being a mother.

And having the need is being a child.

And sometimes we are both.

Happy Mother’s Day.
