A few years ago, I took my birthday off Facebook. I wasn't trying to be demure about my age. I wanted to do a little social experiment and go back to a pre-Facebook world where the birthdays of special people were stored in a little corner of your mind. Even though you might miss it by a day or two, it was seeing the date on a calendar or while scheduling a meeting or writing it on a form or even a check (remember those?) that made you think about that person. Your brain was forced to make the … [Read more...] about birthday on the horizon

winter olympics – nbc tries to ruin sochi
I love the Winter Olympics. Maybe it's because I grew up in a warm climate. Maybe it's because I wish I was Scandinavian. Maybe it's because I love spandex. I turn it on every day, and my favorite events are the ones that are head-to-head races vs. timed/judged competitions - biathlon (of course - who doesn't love the biathlon?), cross-country skiing and short track are a few I make sure to watch. But I'm not liking the coverage. I've come to expect it be heavy in figure skating and ice … [Read more...] about winter olympics – nbc tries to ruin sochi
three things about the mommy wars
I don't talk much about parenting here because this blog is kind of a respite from that part of my life, but when I saw this photo essay, I felt like I was ready to chime in on dun, dun, dun...The Mommy Wars. Mothers going head to head and judging other mothers about parenting styles and choices that they make for their families. But here's the thing, all this posturing about breastfeeding vs. formula feeding, c-section vs. home birth, organic vs. gmo, well, it's not the real issue. I applaud … [Read more...] about three things about the mommy wars
snow day
We're having a Wednesday snow day to break up the week. Although, we had a half day Friday, Monday off, and Tuesday was a weather related early release. So maybe it's more of a Wednesday snow day to extend the long weekend. Growing up in a mild climate, we didn't have snow days. So they're still a novelty to me. There's something about a snow day that feels like a bonus. You're not expected to do anything except shovel a bit and make hot chocolate. The snow gear is piled and damp by … [Read more...] about snow day
an attempt to unplug
I've participated in social media fasts before, and I found them to be really helpful. At the time, it allowed me to focus on some important things without distraction. It was amazing how much I felt aware of myself and the world around me. I've also been trying to cut down how and when I use my phone as a crutch or distraction. So between Christmas and New Year's I decided to give myself a little respite from social media and connectedness and put away my phone. I would take the opportunity … [Read more...] about an attempt to unplug
happy days
Hey there. Just a little reminder that I'll be taking the week off from the blog. Try not to miss me too much. While I'm away you can always check out my Food Favorites from 2013 if you haven't had a chance yet. I'll be back on January 2nd, rested and fresh and ready to start the New Year. As for Christmas - you've got this. It's time to let go whatever didn't get done and enjoy what did. This year I realized that I never quite feel ready, but then it's here. And then it's … [Read more...] about happy days
where’s the spirit?
Are you getting sick of all my holiday shenanigans? Not many days left until winter break. I'll be shutting down ye ole blog from December 22 through New Year's Day so only a few posts left in 2013. If you can't stand a Kaly-free Christmas, I'm sure I'll be posting a highly edited version of my holiday over on Instagram. This weekend I had planned outings and projects all revolving around Christmas and being in the spirit of things. We're making memories man. And building traditions. Isn't … [Read more...] about where’s the spirit?
what will you bring?
I've got giving on my mind. And the new year. And I'm really amped up for both. And somehow, I've managed to keep the spending and the shopping and the mania under control. Fingers crossed with two weeks left. (If you're feeling the pull to do more, check out my posts on finding the balance and three things at the center of our holiday.) And with this extra time and space, I'm zooming out. Way, way out. I'm looking at the big picture. I'm looking at a warm shelter after many said … [Read more...] about what will you bring?
