I follow Anna Quinlen on Facebook. As I’ve mentioned before, she’s one of my all time favorite writers and human beings. She doesn’t post that often but when she does, it’s usually to make reading suggestions, many times to promote other women writers. A day after President Trump announced his intention to take the United States out of the Paris Agreement, she posted, and one of the books she suggested, you’ll find on the list below (Saints for All Occasions). But it was what she said in … [Read more...] about The Story of My Spring, Told Through My Reading List

Eat Dirt by Dr. Josh Axe: Embracing My Dirty Side
I'm not a very clean person. I don't think about germs. I don't wash my hands all that often. I'll eat off the floor (within the parameters of the five second rule–how gross do you think I am?). I've never purchased an anti-bacterial soap, wipe, or cleaner. I don't use bleach. I've never used hand sanitizer. Okay, maybe once, only out of peer pressure. I use public restrooms and port-a-potties and touch handrails in public places without thinking twice. In yoga, I put my … [Read more...] about Eat Dirt by Dr. Josh Axe: Embracing My Dirty Side
Long Lost Interview: Good Move
Funny story: last year right after Good Move was released, I was interviewed for a podcast about how as a busy mom I manage the demands of modern family life. I had a nice chat with Alexa from Lose the Cape, a blog and online community of mothers trying to debunk the myth of the super mom (something I can fully get behind) and share motherhood survival strategies (oh how I love a good strategy!). We talked about... Finding time to work as a busy mom My time management … [Read more...] about Long Lost Interview: Good Move
How to Be the Administrator of Your Own Rescue: What I Learned Reading Eat Pray Love
The first time I read Eat Pray Love, I didn't get it. It was after the birth of my first son and the book was peaking in popularity. My newly formed book club, consisting of sleep-deprived mothers who needed to get out of the house, picked it for our inaugural read. We all loved Eat. How could you not with its overflowing plates of pasta and the pure pleasure that is Italy? I had studied in Rome myself and felt transported to a less tethered time and place away from the monotony of new … [Read more...] about How to Be the Administrator of Your Own Rescue: What I Learned Reading Eat Pray Love
My New Yorker Project: How I Tried Reading My Way to a More Interesting Life
I've got a little something different for you today. Last fall, I had an idea to read The New Yorker cover to cover, every week for as long as I could and then write about it. I lasted twelve weeks. Today, I published my finished article about the experience on Medium. I published it there, instead of here on my own blog, because I've been wanting to post on Medium for ages, and because this piece is a longer format than I usually share here–it's a twelve minute read according to Medium's … [Read more...] about My New Yorker Project: How I Tried Reading My Way to a More Interesting Life
Even When It’s Not Your Thing, It Can Still Be A Thing #10yearsaparent
The flyer came home from school on a Thursday. All of the flyers for various events, activities, calendars, and sign-ups arrive in the Thursday folder. I understand the school's intent to streamline the amount of paper and flyers that get sent home, but the brimming Thursday folder pushes my stress meter right into the red zone. It's not the sorting and organizing. I find great pleasure in going through the piles of pastel colored paper and dividing them into Keep and Recycle. Interested and Not … [Read more...] about Even When It’s Not Your Thing, It Can Still Be A Thing #10yearsaparent
Good Move Is Here!
This is not a drill! It's the launch of my book Good Move: Strategy and Advice for Your Family's Relocation. If you search the internet or book stores for information about moving with kids, you’ll find an abundance of hacks, checklists, and tips for decluttering and staging. It’s harder to find information on designing a move that improves life for your whole family, what’s involved with the emotional transition for you and your kids, and how to run a household while tackling the … [Read more...] about Good Move Is Here!
Titles I Would Add to the Parenting Bookshelf #10yearsaparent
Ever since the Reading Rainbow song looped non-stop in my head as a child (you're welcome), I've been on the look out for titles that speak to me. I have a special soft spot for books of the how-to and self-help variety. I take great comfort in the idea that other people have been there, and I'm not alone in my quest for answers. I've noticed a few gaps on the parenting bookshelf. My inner librarian would like to see these titles the next time I'm browsing Barnes & Noble... Does it … [Read more...] about Titles I Would Add to the Parenting Bookshelf #10yearsaparent
