First an announcement: I was on Mamalode again this month with a piece about learning to laugh at myself. I hope you'll head over and check it out. Now on to your history lesson: Even if you could pick me out of a line up, you might not know exactly why or how I got here. So I've decided to share a little bit of my history and how it's led me to this point. I've chosen an interview format, because it's always important to be prepared for when Oprah or Ellen call. Q: Let's take it way, … [Read more...] about history lesson

the secret recipe
I have a piece called The Secret Recipe on Mamalode today. The theme at Mamalode this month is It's Complicated, and I decided to write about baby showers. Well, not exactly. The piece is about wanting to share the real secret of motherhood with new moms but knowing that they have to figure it out on their own. If you've ever wanted to cause a scene at a baby shower, this one is for you. … [Read more...] about the secret recipe

a little new orleans getaway
Sometimes the stars just align. Your husband has a work trip in New Orleans, your in-laws are coming into town and can help take care of your kids, the airfare to New Orleans is reasonable and you don't have much else going on so you think, why not? Why not tag along? So today, I'm writing in New Orleans. It could be a hotel room in any city, but here are a few things that are making this little New Orleans getaway special. did you ask for what you want?
When someone, especially my children, make a statement like – I'm hungry. I'm tired. I'm bored. It drives me bonkers. Don't make declarations, I tell them. Ask for what you want. It is with this in mind that I've signed up for a year long program where the goal is to get 100 rejection letters. Because if you're not getting rejected, you're certainly not asking for what you want. I started this blog a year and a half ago, because there was a little whisper inside me that said: … [Read more...] about did you ask for what you want?
you have no idea
The other day I put my kids on the school bus, went to yoga, stopped by the wine store, got home and made a green, gluten-free, dairy-free smoothie, swapped my lululemon yoga pants out for a pair of pre-distressed boyfriend jeans, put my hair in a top knot, made my Whole Foods list... And thought holy shit, I am such a mom cliché. Could I be morphing into a soccer mom, a Stepford Wife or the more recent lululemon mom? Or some mutant variation of all three? How and when did that happen? This … [Read more...] about you have no idea
i wrote a book
About a year ago, I had an idea for a book, and I decided to write it. I haven't written a book before. While I liked the idea of writing a book, since I wasn't an expert in any particular area and I didn't have a character that I wanted to bring to life, I had never really thought of writing a book as a possibility. Once I came up with an idea, I certainly didn't know if I would be able to finish it. I was scared of the incomplete manuscript. I was worried that a book would be just another … [Read more...] about i wrote a book
meet harlow park media
Hello there. I'm back from the beach and as usual I am having a really hard time transitioning back to the real world. It seems the only thing I am motivated to do is plot how I can live at the beach for the entire summer next year. Some days just keeping everyone fed and alive seems like an accomplishment and yesterday was one of those days. But today is a new day, and I'm hoping that this post will be the gateway to a very productive week that involves a lot of sibling harmony and … [Read more...] about meet harlow park media
