I'm not a very clean person. I don't think about germs. I don't wash my hands all that often. I'll eat off the floor (within the parameters of the five second rule–how gross do you think I am?). I've never purchased an anti-bacterial soap, wipe, or cleaner. I don't use bleach. I've never used hand sanitizer. Okay, maybe once, only out of peer pressure. I use public restrooms and port-a-potties and touch handrails in public places without thinking twice. In yoga, I put my … [Read more...] about Eat Dirt by Dr. Josh Axe: Embracing My Dirty Side

the end of a nutella era
Back in April, I shared that I gave up wine for Lent and what I had learned about my relationship with alcohol by stepping away for a few days (40 to be exact). After my wine experiment, I realized that while I had been able to weather the no-wine challenge, I had allowed myself to be more lenient in other areas. Basically, I replaced wine with Nutella. Aren't you supposed to be low sugar? Or something like that? And yes, I try to be. But during this time, I put down wine and picked up the … [Read more...] about the end of a nutella era
making better choices, starting with lunch
My skin is acting up. My stomach isn't doing much better. My energy level is off-the-charts low, bottomed out. I know exactly what I have to do to get myself back on track. We know the drill: Eat more fruits and veggies and less sugar. Get a little exercise. Lay off the caffiene and the alcohol. Shop for healthy things so that you have healthy choices on hand. There is nothing complicated about the solution. I don't need a diet plan to remind me to eat less crap and to be a little kinder to … [Read more...] about making better choices, starting with lunch
the gut story – part two
I'm back with Part Two. If you missed Part One, you can get caught up here. And for the results... The food testing showed that I have sensitivities to corn, rye, salmon, tea, and chick peas. These seemed totally random to me like they could have just been drawn out of a hat. The environmental testing showed that I was highly sensitive to dust and dust mites, down feathers, and just about all molds. The other tests showed that I had an overgrowth of candida in my gut. Candida is a … [Read more...] about the gut story – part two
the gut story- part one
A few weeks ago when I presented you with the whole story, I kind of glazed over the health piece. I got sick. I got better. But it wasn't exactly that easy. I've made some significant changes over the past few years to stay functioning and healthy. And because this is a long story, I've divided it into two parts. The second will be posted on Friday instead of the weekly What Kaly Found. If you're a subscriber it will come in your email on Saturday. Before I get into all the gory details, … [Read more...] about the gut story- part one
what kaly found – favorite recipes
I haven't spent a lot of time writing about food and health on the blog, because I feel like there's already so much information out there, and I don't really have anything new to add to the conversation. But today I'm really excited to share with you a little something that's become a holiday tradition in our house. Two years ago I was trying to think of a gift that I could make, that would be useful and not just more stuff. I started keeping track of our favorite family recipes and printing … [Read more...] about what kaly found – favorite recipes
three things that will make you love gp
It’s hard for me to understand why people hate Gwyneth Paltrow so much. I mean they really hate her. She was voted most hated celebrity (over Chris Brown I might add) in a recent Star Magazine poll. More hated than someone who hits women? That’s a lot of ill will. And a large statement about the readers of Star Magazine. But I stand by GP. I regularly read her web site. I own both her cookbooks. The first one I picked up at Goodwill for $1.00, but I do own it. I think she is a smart … [Read more...] about three things that will make you love gp
home cooking
After living in a hotel last week and being on the brink of living in a hotel for all of next week, I'm really appreciating some good home cooking while I can. Eating out is such a chore for me with my various food restrictions, that unless it's a special occasion or celebration with multi-courses and fancy cocktails, I'd rather just stay home. Eating out while traveling is even a bigger hassle. Every meal is a puzzle. It's always a fine dance of I definitely can not have this, this and … [Read more...] about home cooking
