My favorite season is fall. I refuse to call it autumn. That’s just over the top and pretentious. I love everything about fall – the warm in the sun, cool in the shade, the breaking out of sweaters and jeans and scarves and soup recipes, and I can even humor the trend of creating everything with a pumpkin flavor. Because it’s fall. And everything is crisp. The air. The light. The apples. The leaves. The hurry up and harvest before winter sets in. Nature’s preparation for going internal. The … [Read more...] about three things for fall
in my head
Happy Tuesday people. If the blog seems a little all over the place, it's because it is. I've been thinking a lot about writing, and I've been doing a lot of writing recently but it hasn't made it up on the blog. I've spent the last few weeks working on my submission for an essay contest. Towards the end, it was feeling overworked and pointless. Time to wrap it up and submit it already. I've also been doing a lot of planning and brainstorming and will have some additions to the blog coming … [Read more...] about in my head
three things i’m tossing out the window
I’m going a little tough love on myself this week. I have some go-to excuses that I’ve been using (admittedly for years) that keep me from getting to the things that I say are really important to me. We all have that list whether it’s the big sort of dreams that we’re not going after or the little daily choices like eating healthy or staying organized. So it’s time to banish the excuses and get down to business. Here are three things I’m tossing out the window… 1. There's a right way. I'm the … [Read more...] about three things i’m tossing out the window
it’s enough
I’ve been waiting for this week. I’ve been living by the refrain…when the kids go back to school. But this week is kind of a false start – we had Monday off for Labor Day and then Thursday and Friday off for Rosh Hashanah. That’s only two days of school to work with. Not enough time to get into a groove on anything. So I decided that I would give myself the gift of two days. After a long weekend of having guests and getting ready for those guests (we had a great visit with my brothers and … [Read more...] about it’s enough
three things on my list
I'm not feeling sad about the end of summer. Or sending the kids off to school. I love both. I love new supplies and new tennis shoes and emergency contact information sheets that I have to fill out 42 separate times. I love the little systems that we use to keep ourselves organized and the morning routine and our daily breakfast menu and the homework rituals. I love it all. I love it all until June when I'm sick of it all. It's the perfect system. Sure I will think about my kids when they … [Read more...] about three things on my list
back from tally
This summer I just got in my head that I wanted my kids to see my childhood world, swim in my parents’ pool and visit the places I went when I was growing up, so I organized a pilgrimage to North Florida after a three and a half year absence. When you live far away from where you grew up and the plane fares are astronomically expensive and your parents are mobile and able to come to you, it's easy not to go home. Plus, Florida in August? Not for the faint of heart. And being home is kind of like … [Read more...] about back from tally
three things about marriage
As we’re celebrating our ten-year wedding anniversary this week, I’ve been thinking a lot about marriage (or any committed long term relationship) and what makes it work. I’m in the camp that marriage is work. When Ben Affleck was giving his acceptance speech at the Oscars and thanked his wife for "working on their marriage..it is work but it's the best kind of work," I wanted to stand up and cheer while everyone else seemed a little bit embarrassed for him. As I see it, work isn’t bad. It’s … [Read more...] about three things about marriage
ten years
This Friday, it will be ten years since Kevin and I were married. I want to say something poignant about life and love and the passage of time, but all I keep thinking is ten years? How the heck did that happen? Because nothing has changed, and everything has changed. There really isn’t any other way to describe it. So we just keep on keeping on. Spanning time. I think my mother-in-law said it best when talking about her own 44 year marriage, “We’ve been lucky in that we’ve grown toward each … [Read more...] about ten years
