Coming off a holiday and then a vacation, leaves most of us a little down, a little out of it, a little wistful for the days of 3:00 pm Bloody Marys, Vanderpump Rules marathons, and eating gelato straight out of the tub.
Yes, you could say I am resisting reentry into what some would call real life.
All this talk of making it the BEST. YEAR. EVER. is already making me want to poke my eyeballs out. All this talk of detox makes me want to reach for the whiskey. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for self-reflection and goal setting. I love a fresh start.
I’m just not convinced that the first week in January, in the dead of winter, post-vacation is the best time to take it on.
The natural world is hibernating. I’m going to take the hint.
My strategy is to tackle the easy stuff. Take care of the little things that I can do to make each day a bit better.
In the first week of 2015 I resolve to…
1. Exfoliate: Yep, I’m scrubbing off some dead skin, doing a face mask I got as a free sample, and buffing myself up like Baby New Year.
2. Make plans with friends: Sure it’s an arctic blast out there, but nothing cures a case of the January blues like commiserating with your favorite people.
3. Buy a bra (or any new undergarment): I’m starting the year off right with elastic that stretches in any color but nude. A simple thing that will make me happy every damn day.
4. Make soup: There’s something so comforting and self-righteously healthy about a pot of soup. Bonus: fewer dishes to wash.
5. Unsubscribe: I spent 15 minutes removing myself from email lists that clutter up my inbox, and I’ve never felt better. See ya later 95% off flash sale at LOFT.
6. Read something, anything: Time to put something of value into that brain. Even if it’s just a recipe for soup.
7. Clean out one shelf: Just one. No need to go crazy. The satisfaction of cleaning out one shelf will make you feel like you are nailing this resolution thing.
Those are my resolutions. Completely manageable. Completely unremarkable.
I don’t have to shake up my whole life just because the calendar flipped over.
I’ve resolved to keep it simple. Keep it small. Keep it real.
Next week I’ll be taking a look back in order to make some public declarations about the year to come, but this week I’m all about resolutions I can’t screw up.
I’m right there with you! I am cleaning things out little by little and taking baby steps. Big projects overwhelm me and then they never end up completed!
I have 2 good book suggestions – 10% Happier – Dan Harris and Signs of Life. I don’t know the author but I can’ t put it down. It is a memoir.
Thanks for the books suggestions – I’m adding to my reading list. Way to keep things small! Big isn’t always better.
I can totally not screw any of these up!! Unsubscribing and unfriending on fb are some of my favorite things to do. You feel less stress the minute you do it!
Thanks to an unsubscribing binge my email is eerily calm today. I like it. A lot. My plan is to get rid of retailers/magazines and add more content from real peeps.
