First a little blog housekeeping…
As I was reading through my posts from the last year, I realized that there were some basic themes popping up and my categories weren’t really doing them justice. So I created a new list of categories and reorganized everything. If you’re fairly new to the blog and want to check out a particular section, just head over to the categories list on the right hand side or if you’re reading on a mobile device, you can find the list if you scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page. Here are the new categories:
Authenticity, books and reading, family life, favorite finds, gut health, just plain funny, relocation, work and career, and finally the catch-all category of indescribable events.
And now for an updated look at my nightstand and what I’m reading these days:
Outliers, The Story of Success; Malcolm Gladwell: In a culture that loves to believe in the overnight success story, Malcolm in his easy-to-read yet in depth look at success breaks down the truth about success and how it really happens. I’m a fan and finding this to be a great read. Not too heavy and really, really interesting.
Amulet, The Stonekeeper’s Curse; Kazu Kibuishi: The second in a six book series, my boys and I are reading the first four books and discussing in a mom & kids book club (we read them on our own and come together to discuss, usually cuddled up in someone’s bed). This is my first graphic novel experience, and I have to pace myself and slow waaaaay down to really appreciate the images and not just zoom through to get to the plot. It’s good practice for me.
Bird by Bird, Some Instructions on Writing and Life: Annie Lamott: I feel like every writer references this book at some point. So I ordered a copy and have been saving it for that moment when inspiration wanes.
Life after College, The Complete Guide to Getting What You Want; Jenny Blake: Even though this is research I’m doing for another project (and I’m 15 years out of college), there are some valuable exercises and advice in here when it comes to figuring your life out. I’m a fan of Jenny’s blog so not surprising that I like the book too.
Socialnomics, How Social Media Transforms the Way We Live and Do Business; Erik Qualman: I sat next to Erik’s brother at a wedding in Ireland about 12 years ago. Small world. As for the book, if you use social media in your business, this is a really good reminder of why it’s so important and how it can work for you when it’s done well.
Why I Read, The Serious Pleasure of Books; Wendy Lesser: I want to love this book. This book seems like it was made for me. I just can’t seem to get into it, but I’m not ready to give it up.
The Secret Life of Bees; Sue Monk Kidd: My obsession with Sue continues. After reading in Traveling with Pomegranates how this book came to be, I am dying to go back and read again this story of a little girl, the bees in her walls and her new family.
Looking for more books? Here’s a look at my previous nightstand.
Have a very real weekend.
