the answers are not on google

Dear mom searching Google for the answers,

I know you. Because I was you.

You can trust me when I tell you, there is no right answer.

You have everything you need.

You are the parent.

Walk to a mirror, look yourself in the eye and repeat,

I am the mother until you believe it.

Chances are you feel like an impostor, like you have no credentials, no degree or certificate.

Maybe you’re doubting everything, maybe the anxiety and sleep deprivation have left you a little shakey. A little more desperate.

I’ve spent hours trying to solve problems, trying to track down the right answer. Hours I could have spent sleeping or reading or holding my baby.

When I should have,

Trusted my gut.

Learn to trust your gut.

It will be hard.

But you can trust that you will know. You will know when your baby needs to eat. You will know when your child is really sick. You will know when something is really wrong. You will know when to implement the boundaries that work best for you. You will know before the experts and the non-experts with a lot of opinions that they put out on the internet.

Stop Googling.

You are the expert when it comes to your own child. Your own family.

If you need help, ask for it. If you need support, ask for it. If you need community, reach out.

Just promise me you’ll stop Googling yourself down the rabbit hole of doubt.

Please promise me that. And repeat after me: I am the mother.

#tenyearsaparent is a weekly blog series about what I’ve learned in my first ten years as a parent. Whether you’re a parent nodding in agreement or shaking your head with disgust or a non-parent using these posts as birth control (the surgeon general wants me to tell you that reading blog posts about parenting is not an effective form of birth control), I’ll be spilling the beans on what parenting is really all about.
