Well, the weekend is here and we have zero plans. Sometimes zero plans can be good. But sometimes zero plans turns into two days spent indoors refereeing wrestling children who can not stand to be either near or apart from each other. Which trust me is not entertaining, relaxing or restorative in the least.
And 25% of us have a cold. I was able to battle it off (I found this yoga sequence to be really helpful), but another one of us was struck yesterday.
But wait. I guess I have some plans. Maybe plans is a stretch, but I do have some expectations about what will go down this weekend.
Let’s start with the important stuff.
What I’ll be eating: Friday night is pizza night in our household. I buy the dough and make traditional pizza for the boys. I make my own pizza on brown rice tortillas since I haven’t found a gluten free pizza dough that works for me. It’s more like a crispy flatbread. Saturday morning we make pancakes. These almond meal ones are my current obsession. And when there’s football, I make turkey meatballs. I eat them over greens and the boys eat them on sub rolls with provolone cheese. Meatball sub!!! That is a Regular Show reference that my husband and kids make every time we have meatballs and that they think is roll-on-the-floor hilarious.
What I’ll be drinking: My favorite tea. I should buy this by the case especially in the winter. Two weeks ago it was out of stock at Trader Joe’s, and I might have actually welled up in the aisle. Tea? Tea?!?! I know it’s very hard to believe, but I sort of inadvertently quit drinking. I was feeling crappy coming into January and just sort of stopped and haven’t been that interested in starting again. It’s a little disconcerting for this die-hard wine drinker but maybe my body just needs a timeout. I’ll keep you posted on how this plays out.
What I’ll be reading:
Fiction: The Signature of All Things, Elizabeth Gilbert – About two thirds of the way through and just can not even begin to predict what will happen to dear Alma.
Nonfiction: Firstlight, Sue Monk Kidd – I saw Sue speak this week at the Free Library of Philadelphia. I knew very little about her but had read The Secret Life of Bees many years ago when it first came out. Well, she was such a joy and inspiration to me. I learned that she also writes about feminism and spirituality, two of my very favorite topics so I picked up Firstlight which is a collection of her early spiritual writings. I also ordered two copies of Traveling With Pomegranates: A Mother Daughter Journey to the Sacred Places of Greece, Turkey and France – one for me and one for my mom. I plan to force my mother into a long distance reading club with me. I’ll let you know how that goes.
Magazines: Afar – Saturday morning coffee is my time for magazines. And I’ve have the latest issue of Afar in my cue. It’s just about the most lovely travel magazine around. A girl can dream right?
What I’ll be watching: Last night Kevin and I had the treat of going to the movies – in the theater. We saw American Hustle meeting my goal to see one movie nominated for something outside of the Best Animation and Best Song categories. And a lot of it was filmed in Worcester – our old stomping grounds. Enjoyed seeing some of the landmarks that we came to love in the nine years we spent there.
And yes, I will be watching the Superbowl because at some point in the last twelve months my kids have decided that they care about football. A lot. I wish you could hear our dinner conversations. They are football laden and adorable. I’m not a Seahawks or Broncos fan, so I thought The Skimm breakdown of the teams, coaches and players was super (get it??!?!) helpful. Now I can kind of keep up with the football conversation.
What I’ll be doing: If I get my way, we’ll be getting a little culture in on Sunday before we settle in for some bone crushing sports and commercial rating. First Sunday of the month is free. I’ll also be painting my toes with my favorite Zoya polish because the Christmas pedicure is getting to be down right embarrassing.
Not your typical What Kaly Found, but felt like shaking things up a bit.
Have a very real weekend.
I know this is an old post but you’ve inspired me….we make pancakes on Sunday but I will be trying these…..and I’m writing my grocery list now for the turkey meatballs and to say I need to take of my toes right now is an understatement. Thanks Kaly!
I think we ate those turkey meatballs every Sunday during football season. It was a nice little tradition to have. Recently I’ve been making a big batch of the pancakes and save the extras for my breakfast during the week – one of those with some slice banana or berries is my new go to breakfast. Hope you like them! Treat yourself to a pedicure this weekend – you’ll feel so much better. Even in the winter when your just stuffing your feet in socks it’s a nice little treat.
