what kaly found v.4

WKFThis week I’m sharing a couple of my favorite things…

So, How Was Your Day? This is my favorite web site right now. I’m a sucker for the-day-in-the-life set up, and I love reading about interesting people doing interesting things. After reading Max Wastler’s profile, I found myself in line at the store holding a bottle of Basil & Hayden’s. But that’s another story. If you’re inspired by the breadth of options life has to offer from where you live to what you eat to how you make a living, then this will be right up your alley. It will leave you thinking, “I never knew that you could get paid for that….”

Songza Sorry Pandora, but you’ve just been replaced. Songza is a collection of playlists curated by music experts. Whatever. It’s free and it cleverly asks me what I’m doing and the mood I want to be in a then serves up the tunes. Even though their logo is lame, I love it. And I don’t have to remind Pandora for the 800th time that I do not like Green Day.

And finally, a late addition to last week’s what kaly found geared toward the ladies. I am totally fascinated by this UN Women ad campaign that addresses widespread sexism through real Google searches.  So fascinated that I did some of my own Google testing and this is what I found.

Here’s what auto-populated when I typed in Women should…

womenshould

Pretty bleak even the shoulder tattoos and exercises carry a certain women-as-object angle. And just for good measure, I tried Men should…

menshould

This is just plain confusing. Make-up but not shorts huh? And while not quite as blatantly sexist, there’s still undertones of looking and acting a certain way. Bottom line – traditional gender roles and stereotypes are something that both women and men have to deal with. And they run deep through every layer of society. Even our search engines.

Hope you have a very real weekend.

love the UN Campaign – using it with high school students in the classroom to spark great conversation. (Also really love the Cameron Russell tedtalk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KM4Xe6Dlp0Y) And thanks for the intro to Songza!

Hey Linds I’ll check out that talk. Love, love that you are using the UN campaign with students. I’m loving the Sweater Weather Songza mix. Have you found that one yet?
