a way with words

Me: Hi, yes, my name is Kaly Sullivan, and I need to have a technician come maintenance our furnace.

Operator: Sure Mrs. Sullivan.  How does next Thursday at 11:00 work for you?

Me: Perfect. Do you have my phone number? I’m just not sure what number you have on file.

Operator: We have 978-460-2803 on file.

Me: That’s my husband’s old number, and he’s not here anymore.

Operator: Oh. (Pause.) I’m so sorry.

Me: No, no. He’s just in Philadelphia. He doesn’t live here anymore. He’s moved there. I mean, I’m, we, my family is moving there. We’re not separated or anything. He has a new job, and so we’re moving. Together. So yeah, we’re moving to Philadelphia, and we’re selling our house. So, you know, we need the furnace to be in tip top shape. Because we’re moving. To Philadelphia. All of us. Together. He’s just already there. Working. So he’s not here.  He’s there.

(Uncomfortable silence.)

Operator: Oh. I see.

Me: Okay. So next Thursday at 11:00 then?

Thank God this is almost over.

just plain funny, moving with kids

It was absolutely ridiculous on so many levels. Sigh. I just could not stop explaining myself.

Jane! Thank you! You have no idea how much fuel that gives me to keep going. I love seeing pics of your kids on FB – they look like little cherubs that should speak in an English accent. Thanks again for fessing up on being a reader…

I love your blog too! I get to know all the facts without bothering you with phone calls and texts. It is amazing how beautifully you express yourself in writing. You definitely have a gift and you should continue. I can get anything you want read by my dear friend Kara at Random House. I understand all of your emotions and all of your internal struggles. Life is a crazy place and sometimes I don’t know why I always argue with all the voices and people in my head. I guess it is part of being a Gemini. I am so happy for you and cannot wait for you to be closer. Philadelphia is different in so many ways…..good and not so bad 🙂 I wish you some peace and comfort over the next few weeks. Please know that even though I have not seen you in years you can lean on me. Whether it be unpacking, making arrangements, babysitting or taking kids to the park so you and Kevin can make heads or tails of your house. Anything…….

Thanks Kel – it is so comforting to know that I will at least know one person and it’s awesome that person is you. Do they have an Our House there where we can sit on the couch and drink Bud Light? Because that would be a-maaaa-zing. How far we’ve come…. XOXOX PS Thank you for being so supportive of my writing. Sometimes the voices in my head ask me “Who do you think you are? Deciding to be a writer?” Now I can tell them that Kelly says that I am – so ha!

Hi Nancy – So happy to hear that we will stay connected. DFS has been such a large part of my adult life and I’m so proud of you and what you’ve been able to do in Boston. Thank you for inspiring me to do the same work here in Worcester. Have a great lunch!
