whats-upSo yeah, I took a break from my blog, and I am having a hard time getting back to business.  It wasn’t intentional.  I had my three things all lined up for a post on Friday, but when I sat down with my morning coffee to write nothing was flowing.  Before I got any decent writing done, it was time to head out for Memorial Day.  And it was either get an early start and beat the traffic or hang around and plod through a blog post that I wasn’t that into.  So, we got on the road.  And all weekend I kept thinking, I should post something.  Even if it’s just have a nice long weekend or thank you service men and women or a picture or anything  – but I didn’t.  So now it’s been a week, and I am trying to get back into the groove of things.  Apologies to my regular reader (hi Mom – everything is fine) for not being around.

I was at a barbecue yesterday and noticed that I always get the same few questions, so I thought I’d do an update about what’s up with me these days.  You can pretend that you learned all of this while hanging out with me at a sunny Memorial Day celebration.

How’s the move going? Our house is still under agreement and has made it through all of the major milestones, so now we just hold our breath until the closing.  Our new place is all lined up and ready to go, and we’ll be headed down to our new home at the end of June.  We’re using a moving company that will come and do a lot of the packing and all of the moving.  I’ll be spending the next few weeks deciding what we want to take with us and what we want to get rid of and coordinating all the other logistics. We’ll celebrate July 4th in Philadelphia buried in boxes, but we’ve heard that our new town has the best fireworks around so that should be a great way to kick off our next chapter.

What are you eating? And not eating? After a lot of travel in April and eating a lot of who knows what, I wasn’t feeling so great.  So in order to get myself back on track, I’ve reigned myself in a bit. I’m currently not eating gluten, corn, soy or dairy (cow’s milk).  I do treat myself to a little goat cheese here and there. I eat organic whenever possible and have cut out beef and pork too.  I’ve also cut out processed food almost entirely except for these which are my new favorite treat and of course, potato chips which are my kryptonite. Sugar in very low amounts mostly from fruit, some dark chocolate.  Alcohol only on weekends or celebrations.  It’s a lot but the extra effort seriously improves my quality of life.  The longer I do this I realize that feeling cruddy is rarely worth being lax about what I put in my body. Trust me, I’m extremely envious of people drinking beer and eating nachos and asking for more bread and pass the pizza and all sorts of things that most people eat without any issue. But this is where I am today, so I’m trying to make the best out of it.

What are you reading? For books, I’m reading Then Again by Diane Keaton. I’m about halfway through and like it so far.  Although I wish there were more details on her relationship with Woody Allen which she sort of glosses over.  I also love commencement speeches and tis the season so I’ve been reading these.  And then there’s this gp spoof in the New Yorker which had me rolling. And all other Shouts & Murmurs which are quick, easy reads and never disappoint.  Mad Men fans should check out this one.  I also found this article in the New York Times Magazine about bacteria in the human body really fascinating.  And Boston Globe Magazine took a look into fro yo and its staying power.

What’s going on with your blog? Well, I have a blog which was really my main goal.  Trying to post a couple of times a week. Not really worried about who’s reading it. Or where it’s going.  Just trying to get in the habit of writing on a regular basis.  Once we get settled in Philadelphia, I’ll make a plan.  But for now, it’s enough.

I do hope that you had a relaxing long weekend and are having an easier time getting back into your routine than I am having getting back into mine.  I am continuously in awe of, humbled by, and grateful for the men and women who dedicate their lives to serving and protecting our country.  You deserve so much more than one day.
